WHEN SHAHRUKH KHAN LOST CLASH TO UNKNOWN Z GRADE HEROINE!
English Babu Desi Mam starring Shahrukh Khan and Sonali Bendre and Bandit Queen starring Z grade heroine Seema Biswas was released on 26 January, 1996. Let's forget lifetime, the Shahrukh Khan's starrer English Babu Desi Mam lost the ground from starting as the Seema Biswas starrer Bandit Queen fetched a better opening, weekend and first week collections. Losing clash is one thing but losing clash to unknown Z Grade heroine like Seema Biswas is another thing.
English Babu Desi Mam fetched an opening of 31 Lakhs while Bandit Queen had an opening day collections of 35 lakhs. The weekend numbers for English Babu Desi Mam were 1 crore while for Bandit Queen were 1.14 crores. In the 1st week English Babu Desi Mam collected 1.64 crores while Bandit Queen collected 2.39 crores inspite of unknown Z grade heroine.
Losing clash is longer term is not a problem as the film after initial run on its own merits. But losing clashing in initial means "the star is not that big as it is made out in media".
English Babu Desi Mam had the backing of Shahrukh Khan who was riding high with success of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Ram Jaane and multistarer blockbuster Karan Arjun. But inspite of this, Shahrukh starrer failed to get a good opening. A similar case can be made when Salman's low tacky Veergati with Z Grade production quality and with lesser prints opened to better response compared to DDLJ which had 'A1' production quality along with backing of YRF.
It was only after Dil Toh Paagal Hai, when Shahrukh Khan starrer started generating excellent initial otherwise before it, he was mostly depended on Multistarers and backing of big production movies as in the same period his solo movies like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na, Guddu, Oh Darling Ye Hai India, Maya Mamsaab and Chahat failed to attract a good openings.
The lifetime figures of Bandit Queen was more than thrice of English Babu Desi Mam as Bandit Queen collected astounding amount of 14.09 crores at box-office. On the other hand, English Babu Desi Mam proved a dud by collecting merely 3.78 crores at box-office.
Take for example, in 2000 Sanjay Dutt and Hrithik Roshan's Mission Kashmir fetched a much better opening, weekend and 1st week figures compared to Mohabbatein which again had Shahrukh Khan along with Amitabh Bachchan but in longer run Mohabbatein proved a bigger grosser as Mohabbatein run on its merit while Mission Kashmir content failed to click but got a record opening solely on the box-office stamina of Sanjay Dutt, who made huge comeback in 1999 and Hrithik Roshan, who was the craze of the nation with Kaho Na Pyaar Hai and Fiza.
